Chicago Park District & Night Out in the Parks
The Chicago Park District owns more than 8,100 acres of green space, making it one of the largest municipal park managers in the nation. The Chicago Park District’s 580 parks offer thousands of sports and physical activities as well as cultural and environmental programs for youth, adults, and seniors. The Chicago Park District is also responsible for 26 indoor pools, 51 outdoor pools, and 26 miles of lakefront including 23 swimming beaches plus one inland beach. From canoeing to batting cages to arts and crafts, there is never a shortage of activities to participate in Chicago’s parks.
Presented by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Night Out in the Parks brings over 1,200 cultural events to neighborhood parks each year. Chicagoans and visitors alike, enjoy the breadth of world-class events in every one of the city’s 77 community areas. Arts programming in neighborhoods across the city advances the goals of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Cultural Plan. In 2018 Night Out in the Parks series brought more than 1,200 events to neighborhood parks throughout the city, making community parks safe havens and hubs of cultural activity. From traditional performances and concerts, to community workshops, nature-based programs, dance performances, festivals, and more.
The objective and goals of this project were to capture still photography and video for documentation of the events produced throughout the summer for Night Out in the Parks. The Chicago Park District needed images for their marketing collateral such as banners, print advertising, and for social media content. We also produced a short video that recapped the events that we were assigned to attend. This video along with the still photography was later used in an annual report that was shared with their sponsors, supporters, staff, and the Mayor of Chicago
We worked with Chicago Park District staff to create a plan and logistics to capture as many events taking place throughout the city and of a variety of event categories offered by Night Out in the Parks such as music, family fun, and theater. Once there were dates on the calendar and a schedule of events, we formulated a strategy to capture specific shots that were needed in order to effectively and creatively tell the narrative of the summer months in a stimulating manner.
This project resulted in the Chicago Park District meeting their goals and was able to use the still photography and video to produce a gorgeous annual report to be shared with their stakeholders. We were fortunate to see much of Chicago that we had never or rarely visit. We were introduced to new talent in the arts and connect and build relationships where we could add value to. Working with the Chicago Park District’s staff has been a fulfilling professional relationship and has been very rewarding. Spending time in nature is proven to be good for one’s health and being able to work with a client that our values are truly aligned with is dope.
